Performance

The Subaru Impreza relies on a 152-horsepower 2.0-liter flat-four engine that is pinned to a standard five-speed manual transmission. Fuel-efficient and fun to operate, this powertrain produces the vehicle's peak gas mileage of an EPA-estimated 28 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on the highway. These better-than-average numbers are produced despite the power that the vehicle's standard all-wheel drivetrain needs to maintain traction on slippery surfaces around Old Forge.

However, if you want a smoother driving feel, go with the Premium or Limited for a continuously variable transmission instead. To get the feel of a manual transmission, even with the CVT, go for the Sport, which adds paddle shifters and a Manual mode.

Design

For a small vehicle, the Impreza is surprisingly spacious. However, spring for the five-door hatchback for more room. It supplies 100.9 cubic feet of passenger volume and 20.8 cubic feet of cargo volume, compared to the sedan's 99.8 cubic feet and 12.3 cubic feet. In addition, the five-door's rear seats can fold flat to maximize cargo volume at 55.3 cubic feet; the sedan's rear seats do not have that capability.

Regardless of body style, though, the Impreza offers two rows of cloth-trimmed seats to accommodate up to five people. Front-seat heating appears at the Premium trim level. The Sport and Limited trims, each with a leather-wrapped steering wheel to denote their upper-level status, have their share of unique features; the former with racing-style seats and the latter with leather seat trim.

Safety Features

Now standard on all trim levels of the Subaru Impreza, the previously mentioned EyeSight helps you avoid collisions. It consists of technologies such as:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Pre-collision braking
  • Lane departure warning and lane keep assist
  • Sway warning
  • Rearview camera

However, if a collision occurs, the Impreza has a seven-airbag system it can deploy if necessary; the system consists of a driver's airbag, dual frontal-impact airbags, dual side-impact airbags, and dual side-impact airbags. On the Limited, Subaru adds reverse automatic emergency braking, lane change assist, and blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Technology

Featuring a 6.5-inch touchscreen, the Impreza's STARLINK multimedia system brings together:

  • four speakers
  • AM/FM radio
  • single-disc CD player
  • USB port and an audio jack to connect mobile devices
  • Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming
  • Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® smartphone integration

Subaru adds two more speakers and a SiriusXM Radio trial subscription at the Premium trim level. The Sport gets proximity keyless entry, push-button engine start, an eight-inch touchscreen that replaces the smaller 6.5-inch one, and a Wi-Fi hotspot for wireless Internet at 4G LTE speeds. Only the Limited has an automatic climate control system, which means you can set a preferred temperature and subsequently not worry readjusting it.
